How it works
- Pick the type (generic software, web or mobile app) then name, description, URL and a category from Google's list.
- Enter the operating system and version, then the price: type 0 for a free app, otherwise the price and currency.
- Add an average rating only if real user ratings are visible on the page; otherwise leave that section off.
Example
A fictional WebApplication "Example Notes": category BusinessApplication, OS Web, version 2.4, free offer (price 0 USD). 0 errors; 1 warning, because Google also expects a real rating or review for the rich result and the tool invents none.
What the result means
For a software application rich result Google asks for a name, an offer (a price, 0 for a free app) and a real user rating or review, and recommends the category and operating system. Without a rating or review your markup stays valid but eligibility is unlikely: the self-check tells you so without inventing anything.
Common problems this tool helps with
- A free app marked up without an offer: Google expects a price, including 0.
- A free-text category ("tool") instead of a value from the list (BusinessApplication, GameApplication…).
- An average rating that is invented or entered with no visible reviews on the page.
- The wrong type: generic SoftwareApplication for an app that is only mobile or only web.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a rating for the markup to be valid?
No, the markup is valid without one. But Google's rich result requires a real rating or review; without them eligibility is unlikely. The tool tells you that rather than inventing a rating.
What value should a free app use?
Enter 0 as the price and the currency of your choice. The offers property is then present, as Google expects.
SoftwareApplication, WebApplication or MobileApplication?
WebApplication for an app that runs in the browser, MobileApplication for iOS or Android, SoftwareApplication for software that fits neither.
